The 74th Golden Globes Recap

The Golden Globes is an award ceremony that honors the best talent in film and television for the year.  Needless to say, 2016 was a great year for both television and film.  Movies like La La Land, Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, and Lion were the elite films of 2016.  In television, the first seasons of new shows, Atlanta and The Crown received prestigious awards, but it was The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story that earned the most.

Notable Performances

The Golden Globes also honors actors, actresses, directors, and writers for their performances throughout the year.  Some of the most notable performances came from Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. They both took the award for Best Performance in a Musical or Comedy for their roles in La La Land.  As predicted, Casey Affleck took home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama Motion Picture for his incredible portrayal of a lost soul in the emotional movie, Manchester by the Sea.

Best Movies

The Best Drama Motion Picture however went to the amazing film Moonlight. It is a story about human connection and self discovery.  “Moonlight chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood in Miami”, as described on the Golden Globes’ website.

La La Land is a romantic musical drama starring Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and J.K. Simmons.  It is about a musician and aspiring actress that fall in love in Los Angeles.  It took home the award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy along with six other awards.  The musical was nominated for seven awards and won every one of them, setting a record for the most Golden Globes won in a single year.

The Golden Globes are an important celebration of the movie and television industry.  It shows aspiring actors what it takes to be on the stage receiving awards, and it reminds us how inspiring this industry can be.  While many may think that the movie industry is all about money and fame, the Golden Globes remind us that the people behind the camera, the writers, and the actors are extremely passionate for the art of film-making.
