Fox has been struggling to gain and retain viewers for the past several years. Fox has had a rough season trying to launch shows like the heavily hyped Gotham which premiered last fall. Gotham has done well and showcased some rare stability something that is quite unexpected for a serialized drama series. Unfortunately for Fox its reality series, social experiment Utopia was not well received and neither was their drama series Red Band Society and Gracepoint. Even their new comedy series, Mulaney, bombed.

After struggling for quite some time to gain show ratings FOX received some much needed and welcoming news on Wednesday when it premiered Empire which stars Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson. Empire has tied ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder as the highest-rated show premiere of the season with 9.8 million viewers. It is Fox’s most watched show in three years, making it the network’s highest-rated show. Just in case you were wondering Touch was the Network’s highest-rated when it premiered in 2012.

Social media was abuzz with high praise for Empire late into the night and trickling into the wee hours of Thursday. Empire out-performed Fox’s heavily hyped Gotham premiere last fall, and managed to retain its rating throughout its entire hour-another good sign. Another great sign is that Empire was up against other great shows Wednesday night like CBS the People’s Choice Awards where Iggy Azalea took home the award for Favorite Hip Hop Artist and Ben Affleck took home two awards one for Gone Girl (Favorite Thriller) and one for Favorite Humanitarian.

Empire follows the lives of a Hip Hop Dynasty; a music mogul and his tumultuous relationships with his very complicated family. Howard stars as Lucious Lyon, a music industry mogul who is poised to take his music company public and trying to deal with the growing pains of his family who are trying to take a piece of the pie at any cost. The show itself gives an 80’s vibe with the glitz, bling and glamour of current hip hop artists with a dash of backstabbing and calculated schemes. The entire episode was set to an incredible hip hop soundtrack.

Empire is to fox as Nashville is to ABC and Power is to Starz; enveloping family drama, set to a highly hyped and idolized lifestyle.

Is it a must watch? For me it is an of course, I was not disappointed. You would be crazy to miss a moment. If you missed Wednesday’s episode I will not spoil it for you. However if you love hip hop and you’ve wondered what the life of those that make it all happen is like this show is a must watch.

If you are someone who does not like the pounding rhythm of hip hop or escalating family drama with secrets falling out of every closet this show is not for you. They certainly aren’t The Brady Bunch or the beloved Walton’s, this is not a “Goodnight Suzy” type of show. Otherwise let’s grab our shovels and go digging for some good music and chaotic family mischief.

  1. Hello my name is Kiss. I love empire because it’s shows the real soul of hip hop. Hip hop is therapeutic. It shows the true definition of a mother’s love. It’s also shows the struggle of being a father and business man in one. I know people look and only see drama but I see so much more and I love it. My only wish right now is to be apart of Empire. Hopefully my genie reads this and make my one wish come true.

  9. Hello,
    My name is Alexis Long
Ive always wanted to be an aspiring actress on shows like “Empire”! Shows that grabs the audiences attention. I would love to bring my talent and show you all what I am capable of. I take very good direction, I want to perform to the best of my abilities. I do however have Lupus and Arthritis, but that is not going to stop me from performing the way I should perform. I was in a commercial when I was younger and I was recently cast as an extra for the 2015 film Vice starring Bruce Willis. I’m like an energizer bunny to tell you all the truth. When I get into something that I’ve always wanted to be apart of I get really excited. I love to make people laugh and I also love writing poems and short stories for people. I like being creative and I love when people enjoy my creativity. I am very confident in myself and my work. Also if I do mess up, I am not the kind to make excuses. I take responsibility for my actions and learn and do better. I would love to be apart of the show and I would love if you all would give me a chance to show what I got.
    Thank You.

  11. I would suit the role perfectly. I love acting, haven’t done anything serious- although I did drama throughout school. Always find myself acting scenarios around the house, just subconsciously. It’s like second nature, I love putting myself in different situations and act out various reactions. I’m 5’5 caramel/brown skin, long curly hair, light brown eyes and quite the extrovert. I’m good with direction as working efficiently with others. I also love love love dance ! Can’t say I’ve done hip hop but definitely enjoy the genre of dance and have seen quite a few movies about it. I believe I’ve got the look for the cast as well as a bright, unique personality to being to the table. I’m Australian, but I’m very good at impersonating and playing with different accents, so much so that I’ve mastered them pretty well haha ! I have Facebook that I’ve attached as my website, I also have Instagram which is ms.gonthier.
I certainly hope I get to hear from you soon, thank you do much for your time and consideration in reading my application.
    Regards,
    Emily :)
